This Friday, we say farewell to Miss Emma Bridges, who currently teaches in Room 23. Miss Bridges will be starting her new role at Kuratau School on Monday. Hilltop will miss her greatly and wishes her all the best at her new school. ‘Pink Shirt Day’ is this Friday, 17th May. Students can wear a pink shirt and/or pink clothing/accessories to school on this day. Please note that this is not a mufti day. Students are welcome to bring a koha (donation) to help the Mental Health Foundation raise awareness about bullying prevention and fund resources.
Hilltop celebrated World Book Day last week, and it was a huge success. It was great to see the range of costumes and characters. Thank you to Victoria Harhoff for organizing the day and to Paul Charman for helping Victoria with the judging—it was a tough job!
Congratulations to our students who gained their Leadership Team Certificates while working with Heidi from Kids Greening Taupo.

On Friday, the 10th of May, the year eight Mahi peak students got to school at six thirty to do the Tama Lakes walk. We headed to Whakapapa and put on all of our warmest clothes. We embarked on the track at eight-thirty, quickly realising it was too hot. After forty-five minutes of walking, we took our first break at Taranaki Falls. We found great enjoyment in breaking the ice with our boots and rocks. After three hours of hiking, we arrived at the Lower Tama Lake, while it was a lot of fun walking through the extreme wind, it—unfortunately—meant that we weren’t going to be able to walk to the Upper Tama Lake. Instead, we climbed over a small hill for protection from the wind and had a small lunch. Then, we set off again. After a long walk back to the Taranaki Falls, we decided to follow the river back to the Chateau. Many students were exhausted, but it was a beautiful walk and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Attendance at Hilltop School
As you may be aware, the Ministry of Education has increased its attention towards students’ low attendance rates across the country. All schools are now required to closely monitor students’ attendance and formally contact parents if their children fall into any of the following categories :
Chronic absence - 70% and below attendance
Moderate attendance - 71-80% attendance
Irregular attendance - 81-90% attendance
The Ministry of Education’s goal is for all students to be attending school regularly, which equates to more than 90% of the time. More than 5 days of absence within one term will result in your child's attendance dipping below the threshold of 90%.
In instances where a student has 5 unjustified absences from school in a term, notification will be sent out via Hero. This is to alert parents and whanau so that further absences may be avoided. If you would like support with your child's attendance, please contact Callie-anne Dumble (callie-anne@hilltop.org.nz) or call the school for an appointment.
