Room 12 finished off the end of Term 2 in spectacular fashion. We all learnt about an international artist called Romero Britto who does very colourful portraits of people using colours in a very creative way. We did outlines of our faces and then drew all the things in our lives that make us happy around our heads. We finished off colouring in our portraits with bright noticeable colours. It was such fun.

A note of success...

The BMX kids don't often get recognised for their achievements, especially compared to the mainstream sports like rugby, football, hockey, and netball.  I thought your school community should know the results the Hilltop BMX kids achieved at the BMXNZ National Championships held in Hawkes Bay on 16-17 March.

Tuesday was a day of information gaining—for our Year Sevens—and new learning for our Year Eights. The Year Seven students met with Christine Baird, our health nurse, to learn about immunising against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough. The Year Sevens have an immunisation consent form that Christine would like back at school before 10 May.
The Maunga Ruapehu Year Eights spent the day with Paula from the Waikato Institute for Leadership and Sport Studies (WILSS), where they learnt about recognising their leadership potential, developing their confidence, and becoming connected and actively involved in their school community. They also worked on earning the importance of effective communication and how to respectfully value the ideas of others within their team whilst also managing themselves.

As you may be aware, the Ministry of Education has increased its attention towards students’ low attendance rates across the country. All schools are now required to closely monitor students’ attendance and formally contact parents if their children fall into any of the following categories :

Chronic absence - 70% and below attendance

Moderate attendance - 71-80% attendance

Irregular attendance - 81-90% attendance

The Ministry of Education’s goal is for all students to be attending school regularly, which equates to more than 90% of the time. More than 5 days of absence within one term will result in your child's attendance dipping below the threshold of 90%.

In instances where a student has 5 unjustified absences from school in a term, notification will be sent out via Hero. This is to alert parents and whanau so that further absences may be avoided.
