PRINCIPAL'S PERSPECTIVE

Kia ora koutou,
Welcome to Term 2 and a special welcome to our new families to the school. We are looking forward to another term with students engaged in a range of learning opportunities.
I would like to take the opportunity to explain the reasons why sometimes your child’s class teacher may not be teaching in your child’s class at various times. There are several reasons why a class may have a different teacher:
Classroom Release Time:
Teachers are entitled to Classroom Release Time (CRT) for various purposes. From Term 1 2024, the entitlement is 15 hours per term, increasing to 20 hours from Term 3 2024, and 25 hours from Term 1 2025. Hilltop tries to have the same teacher take the release for each class or team where possible.
Leadership Release:
Teachers who have leadership responsibilities within the school often require additional release to engage in learning and plan for further development within the school or the team they lead.

Leave:
Teachers may take sick leave or discretionary leave. When leave is planned in advance, arrangements are made for the relieving teacher to have access to lesson plans.

In cases of sick leave where planning may not be feasible, we expect relief teachers to adequately plan for student engagement.
We have had a term of implementing the KiVa process at Hilltop School. This process includes lessons being taught in the classroom and also dealing with bullying issues as they arise. At times there is confusion between bullying and also a conflict. We have a KiVa team of teachers who work through this process. Please see the flyer below which shows an outline of the KiVa process:
